FLAG

The Dominican flag originated from Duarte's Christian ideals, with two white stripes that intersect to form a cross. The first flags were made by several women: María Trinidad Sánchez, María de Jesús Pina, Isabel Sosa and Concepción Bona. Juan Pablo Duarte conceived it and it was approved as the Dominican flag by Los Trinitarios on June 16, 1838. The Dominican flag was hoisted for the first time on February 27, 1844 at the Puerta del Conde, in the proclamation of Dominican independence.

In accordance with what is described in article 1233 and 1234 of the Constitution, it has a cross in the center that extends towards the extremities and divides the flag into four rectangles: the ones above are ultramarine blue (on the side of the pole) and vermilion red. ; and the bottom ones are vermilion red (on the shaft side) and ultramarine blue. In the center of the cross there is the coat of arms of the Dominican Republic.

The flag since its birth is unique, since there is no other in the world that has the bible and the cross at its center.

The patricians used the color ultramarine blue, as God's protection over the Nation. The vermilion red color like the blood shed by the patriots in our nation's fight for freedom. And the white Cross in the center which symbolizes the peace and unity of the Dominicans. Every detail was carefully chosen and not just an ordinary red or blue is used.

SHIELD

The existence of the coat of arms is enshrined in the constitution of the republic, which describes it as follows:

"The National Shield has the same colors as the National Flag arranged in the same way. It has in the center the Bible opened in the Gospel of Saint John chapter 8, verse 32 and on top of it a cross, which emerges from a trophy made up of three spears and four national flags without a coat of arms, arranged on both sides; it bears a laurel branch on the left side and a palm branch on the right side. It is crowned by an ultramarine blue ribbon in which the motto "Dios Patria Libertad" is read. base there is another vermilion red ribbon whose ends are oriented upwards with the words "Dominican Republic". The shape of the National Shield is a quadrilong, with the upper protruding angles and the lower ones rounded, the center of whose base ends in a point , and is arranged in such a way that a perfect square results when drawing a horizontal line joining the two verticals of the quadrilong from where the lower angles begin."

The laurel branch on the left side of the shield means immortality and the palm branch on the right side represents freedom. It is worth mentioning that this shield is the only national shield that has a bible.
