FLAG

The flag of Equatorial Guinea was adopted on August 21, 1979.

The flag is a horizontal tricolor, with green, white and red stripes and a blue triangle on the hoist. Green symbolizes the country's natural resources, agriculture and jungles. Blue symbolizes the sea, which connects the mainland with the islands. White symbolizes peace. Red symbolizes the blood shed by the fighters for independence.

The six stars on the map represent the mainland of the country and five islands. Under the mandate of dictator Francisco Nguema, the flag was modified and a different national coat of arms was used on it. After he was deposed, the original flag was restored.

The flag flew for the first time on independence day, October 12, 1968, and featured the national coat of arms in the center. However, in 1973, during the Francisco Nguema regime, a different national coat of arms was used on the flag. Under the reign of Nguema, the shield consisted of various tools, a sword and a hen. The modified national motto Trabajo (work) and Unidad, Paz, Justicia (Unity, Peace, Justice) was written in two stripes. The original coat of arms was restored after Nguema was deposed on August 21, 1979. The arms consist of a silver shield bearing a silk cotton tree, or Ceiba in the local language, which was derived from the arms of Mun River. On the shield there is an arch of 6 yellow six-pointed stars, which represent Río Muni and the islands off the coast. Beneath the shield is a silver scroll bearing the national motto, Unidad, Paz, Justicia ("Unity, Peace, Justice"). It is believed that under a silk cotton tree a treaty was signed between Spain and a local ruler that marked the beginning of colonial rule.

SHIELD

The coat of arms of Equatorial Guinea was approved on October 12, 1968. It is a silver field that shows a silk cotton tree or semul tree in its natural colors. The six six-pointed stars represent the five islands and the mainland that make up the territory of Equatorial Guinea. Below appears, written on a tape, the national motto in Spanish: “Unity, Peace, Justice” .

The coat of arms, very similar to the one used during the colonial era, was changed during the dictatorship of Francisco Macías Nguema (1972-1979) for another with more Africanist reminiscences, with traditional tools and weapons, a rooster (symbol of the PUNT, the party of Macías Nguema), and the word "Work" added to the national motto,1 and later restored in August 1979 after the overthrow of Macías.
