FLAG
The national flag of Cyprus came into use on August 16, 1960, under the Zurich and London Agreements, by which a constitution was drawn up and Cyprus was declared an independent state. The flag was designed by art teacher İsmet Güney. The flag's design deliberately employs peaceful and neutral symbols in an attempt to indicate harmony between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, an ideal that has yet to be realized. In 1963, the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities split due to inter-Cypriot community violence.

The flag of Cyprus shows an entire copper-colored map of the island (the metal that gave the island fame throughout its history and from which its name derives), with two olive branches at the bottom, on a white background ( both the color and the olive branches are symbols of peace).
Blue and red (the colors of the flag of Greece and the flag of the Ottoman Empire, respectively) were purposely avoided in order to make the flag neutral. However, today the flag is seen as a symbol of the Greek Cypriots.

NORTHERN CYPRUS FLAG
The flag of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is based on the flag of Turkey, with the colors reversed and two additional horizontal red stripes at the top and bottom. The flag was drawn by Turkish Cypriot artist Emin Çizenel. It was adopted in 1984 by Northern Cyprus, a self-proclaimed state only recognized by Turkey, after its unilateral declaration of independence in 1983.
Although there is no official statement about the meaning of the flag, the star and crescent can be interpreted as representing Turkish identity, the red color representing Turkish Cypriot blood, and the stripes indicating Turkey (above) and North from Cyprus (below).

SHIELD
The coat of arms of the Republic of Cyprus depicts a dove carrying an olive branch, symbolizing peace, about "1960", the year of Cypriot independence from British rule. The background is coppery yellow; this symbolizes the large deposits of copper ore in Cyprus (mainly in the form of chalcopyrite, which is yellow in color). The two-part crown represents the two ethnic groups of Cyprus, Greeks and Turks.

The coat of arms of the internationally unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is styled close to the arms of the Republic of Cyprus, except that the '1960' was removed from the shield below the dove, replaced by the year ' 1983' above the shield, referring to the Declaration of Independence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus by Turkey after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, as well as the Turkish star and crescent emblem were added above the shield.
