FLAG

The flag of Canada, also known in English as "The Maple Leaf" ("the maple leaf") and in French as "l'Unifolié" ("the one with a leaf"), is a red flag with a white vertical rectangle in its center, within which is a stylized eleven-pointed red maple leaf.

Adopted on February 15, 1965, it was the first official national flag of Canada to replace the flag of the United Kingdom. The Canadian Red Ensign ("Red Ensign") had been used unofficially since the 1890s and was approved in a 1945 decree for use "in any place or occasion where it is desirable to display a distinctive Canadian ensign."

In 1964, Canadian Prime Minister Lester C. Pearson appointed a committee to deal with the matter, sparking serious debate about a change of flag. Although there were three options, the Maple Leaf flag design, created by George FG Stanley and John Matheson based on the flag of the Royal Military College, was chosen. The flag made its first appearance on February 15, 1965 and has been celebrated as Canada's National Flag Day ever since.

The length of this flag is twice the height. The white field is a stick and each red field is exactly half the size of the center stick. In the center of the white square is a red maple leaf. In heraldry, the flag has been emblazoned as "gules on a stick in argent to the maple leaf of the first".The flag was registered by the Canadian Heraldic Authority on March 15, 2005.

The maple leaf is a symbol of nature and the environment present in Canada since the s. XVIII.For its part, the number of tips on the blade has no meaning. Both the number and arrangement of the maple leaf tips were chosen after wind tunnel tests showed that the current design became the least blurry of all the designs tested in high winds. The maple leaf image used on the flag was designed by Jacques Saint-Cyr.In 1921, King George V proclaimed that the official colors of Canada would be red, from the cross of Saint George, and white, from the French royal emblem used since the reign of Charles VII.

ROYAL STANDARD

The royal standard in Canada is made up of the five divisions that make up the Canadian coat of arms: In the first division are the elements of the coat of arms of England, three passing lions in gold on a gules background. In the second, which represents Scotland, a rampant lion can be seen within a double border with fleurs-de-lys, on a gold background. In the third, for Northern Ireland, a golden harp is represented on an azure background. In the fourth, there are three gold fleurs-de-lys on an azure background, a symbol of the ancient Kingdom of France. In the fifth division, on a silver background, there are three red maple leaves, which is the symbol of Canada.

On the divisions of the shield, in the Canadian royal standard, a blue circle is represented in which the initial of the reigning monarch appears, the English royal crown (known as the Crown of Saint Edward) and a yellow or gold garland composed of roses .

SHIELD

The coat of arms of Canada has five divisions:

- In the first, there are three leopard lions, the name given to the passing lion, resting on three legs, with their heads facing forward, yellow on a red background, which is the symbol of England.

- In the second, a rampant red lion appears, upright and leaning on one of its legs and located within a trechor of the same color (a narrow, double ribbon decorated with flowers) that are the elements of the Scottish coat of arms .

- In the third, a yellow harp with white strings on a blue background, symbol of Ireland, is shown.

- In the fourth, three yellow fleurs-de-lis on a blue background, symbol of the former Kingdom of France.

- In the lower division, in silver, a maple branch with three red leaves, a symbol of Canada, is represented. A maple leaf features on its flag.

Surrounding the blazon is the insignia of the Order of Canada with its own motto: "Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam" (Latin: "They wish for a better homeland"). The design of the insignia of this order is based on and is very similar to that of the Garter that appears on the coat of arms of the United Kingdom, which is that of its monarchs. This element was incorporated in 1994, at the request of Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.

The shield itself and the insignia of the Order of Canada appear flanked by two figures (supports in heraldic terminology): a lion rampant in gold and a white unicorn, colletado (with an open crown around the neck as a necklace) and chained . These figures are the same tenants that appear on the British coat of arms. Canadian tenants differ from British ones in that the lion appears holding the British flag; and the unicorn, the standard of the ancient French monarchs, with the fleurs-de-lis. These flags are an allusion, like the barracks of the shield itself, to the origin of the settlers who founded the country.

This shield appears stamped with a helmet adorned with a weatherstrip and a lambrequin, these last two elements represented with the colors red and white, the national colors of Canada. On the weatherstrip, an ornament of the helmet that represents a fabric with the main colors of the coat of arms, is the crest of the British monarch, a leopard lion crowned in yellow, but holding a maple leaf, the national symbol of Canada.

On the figure of the crest the British royal crown is represented, the Crown of Saint Edward since the British monarch is also from Canada.

In the lower part appears the ribbon with the national motto "A Mari Usque Ad Mare" (in Latin: "From sea to sea") and some figures in the shape of a rose, a flower of the thistle plant, a lily and a leaf of clover that are the plant symbols of England, Scotland, the former Kingdom of France and Ireland.

With some small modifications, such as the one mentioned in 1994, these are the elements of the coat of arms of Canada since November 21, 1921.
