FLAG

The Costa Rican flag was created on September 29, 1848 along with the National Coat of Arms. Tradition establishes that the conception and design of the current flag, in force since that year, corresponded to Doña Pacifica Fernández Oreamuno, wife of the first president of Costa Rica; José Castro Madriz, inspired by the French flag.

The flag is tricolor by means of five stripes placed horizontally, a red one in the center between two white ones, each of which is followed by a blue one. The width of each band is one sixth of that of the flag, except for the red one, which is two sixths.

The National Pavilion is different because, centered on the red band, it has the National Coat of Arms embroidered on a white background.

The colors represent: Blue, the sky that covers Costa Rica; white represents the peace that reigns in Costa Rica; and red, the love to live, the shedding of blood for freedom, and the generous attitude.

SHIELD

The coat of arms of Costa Rica was promulgated on September 29, 1848, along with the current national flag, during the administration of José María Castro Madriz, President of the Republic. Its parts, such as volcanoes or seas, also have meanings.

The coat of arms consists of a golden frame that represents the grain of gold (coffee). Within the frame there are three smoking volcanoes, which symbolize the three mountain ranges that cross the country and an extensive light green valley between two blue oceans, (Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, which bathe the western and eastern coasts of the country, respectively, as well as those of Central America). In each of these seas there is a merchant ship representing the maritime history of the country. On the horizon, to the left of the shield, a rising sun can be seen in old cannon gold.

The shield is closed by two dark green myrtle palms joined by a ribbon with the legend "República de Costa Rica". The seven silver stars in arc represent the current provinces of the Republic. The auction is formed by a light blue ribbon that serves as a crown with the legend Central America. Originally there were national flags on each side of the shield, a cornucopia and five stars, but in 1906, by Law number 18 of November 27 of the same year, the first two elements mentioned were suppressed and in 1964 two were added. more stars; the shield appears on the red stripe of the flag for state and maritime use (on a white background) and does not appear on the flag for civil use.
