FLAG

The flag of Grenada was adopted following its independence from the United Kingdom on February 7, 1974. It was designed by Anthony C. George

The flag consists of a rectangle divided diagonally into yellow triangles at the top and bottom and green at the sides, with a red border around the flag. It has seven yellow five-pointed stars, three centered on the top edge, another three centered on the bottom edge, and one more in an overlapping red circle in the center of the flag. Finally, a nutmeg pod, symbolically placed, is located in the triangle on the left (Grenada is the second country in nutmeg production, after Indonesia).

The civil and national ensign is the same as the national flag but with a ratio of 1:2 instead of 3:5; furthermore the naval ensign is based on the British White Ensign with the national flag in the canton.

The seven stars represent the seven administrative divisions (municipalities) of Granada, San Juan, San Marcos, San Patricio, San Andrés, San David and the Granadinas, being the one in the center the one that represents the capital Saint George's; they also symbolize the hope of a bright future. Nutmeg (which was also placed on the first flag after independence) is one of the main export products, (this is how Grenada is sometimes referred to as the "islands of spices - Spice Islands").

The combination of red, yellow and green colors (the Pan-African colors) represent the country's relationship with Africa, as the majority of Grenada's population is of African descent. Also, red represents harmony and unity, it also symbolizes courage and vitality, yellow to wisdom and tropical warmth and the friendliness of its people and green represents lush vegetation, fertility and agriculture and the bases economy of the country.

SHIELD

The coat of arms of Grenada was adopted following the independence of this island state of the Lesser Antilles, proclaimed in 1974.

It is a shield quartered by a gold cross, in the center of which is represented the nao Santa María (ship in which Christopher Columbus sailed). In the first and fourth quadrants, gules, a passing lion in gold (adopted from the coat of arms of England). In the second and third, of synopsis, a crescent of gold (crescent moon) with a lily of the same metal (the latter represents the Catholic population). Rings a helmet with burelete, silver and gules, and lambrequin gules; surmounted by a garland of seven flowers representing the parishes of the island. The supports of the shield are an armadillo on the right and a pigeon native to the island on the left, both natural; the first located in front of a corn plant and the second in front of a banana plant, also natural, which grow on a mountainous terrace of Sinople in the middle of which is the Grand Étang, the main lake of the island, with waves of azure and argent. The terrace comes from a silver ribbon with the national motto in English: "Ever conscious of God we aspire, build and advance as people one" ( "Ever conscious of God, we aspire to build and progress as a united people") in letters sable colour.
