FLAG

The flag of Dominica was adopted on November 3, 1978. In the original version, the Sisserou parrot (Amazona imperialis) was facing to the right (it was changed in 1988), and the order of the bars was different (yellow - white - black, top to bottom, changed in 1981).

The flag is formed by three bands united in the form of a cross of Saint George (yellow, sable and white from left to right in the vertical bar and from top to bottom in the horizontal) crossing a field of synople. In the center, a circle of gules with a parrot on a branch, sinister of azure, sinople and gold, and that symbolizes the work abroad. Surrounding the parrot, ten stars in gold embroidery.

The ten stars that surround the parrot represent the ten parishes on the island (San Andrés, San David, San Jorge, San Juan, San José, San Lucas, San Marcos, San Patricio, San Pablo and San Pedro).

The flag is a modification of a design by Alwin Bully who won a competition in 1978.

Green symbolizes vegetation. Yellow, to the Carib Indians, the first inhabitants of the island, the sun and the main export products of the island: bananas and citrus fruits. The white, to the water representing the brightness of the island's rivers and waterfalls. And the black, to the land and to the Afro-descendant population, the majority on the island. The central red disc to social justice. The ten stars surround a sisserou parrot (Amazona imperialis), native to the island, being a symbol of flight to great heights and the fulfillment of aspirations.

Dominica's coat of arms was approved on July 21, 1961. It is a quartered shield of gold and azure by a cross of azure in the half of its arms closest to the gold quarters and of gold in the one closest to the azure barracks

In the first quarter, gold, a coconut tree in its natural colors; in the second, in azure, a toad from Dominica in its natural colors; in the third quarter, in azure, a Caribbean canoe on waves of silver and azure; in the fourth quarter, gold, a banana tree.

The shield is stamped with a silver and azure burelete with a sable rock surmounted by a passing lion armed with gold. As shield supports, two natural imperial parrots, the emblematic animal of Dominica. This bird is also represented on the national flag.

At the bottom is written, in French, the national motto on a gold ribbon with synople letters: "Apres Bondie C'est La Ter" ("After God is the Earth").
