FLAG

The 1958 referendum replaced the French Fourth Republic with the Fifth Republic and at the same time replaced the French Union with the French Community, under which most colonies became "autonomous states", including Côte d'Ivoire on 4 December 1958. The new status allowed the adoption of a distinctive flag for the first time, instead of the French flag. The French commissioner suggested a red, white and blue flag with stars, but the Ivorians wanted a greater departure from the former colonial power's flag. The orange, white and green flag was adopted by law number 59-240, approved by the Legislative Assembly of Côte d'Ivoire on December 3, 1959, just before the first anniversary of the country's autonomy.

The Ivory Coast flag is a tricolor flag, inspired by the French flag, which is made up of three vertical stripes of equal width, the one on the side of the pole being orange, the central one white, and the outer one green. Its stripes are identical to those of the Irish flag, differing in the order of the sequence of colors and in the proportion of its size.

In 1959, when the Ivory Coast Legislative Assembly adopted the flag, Minister of State Jean Delafosse declared:

The National Emblem must be the living symbol of the country:

- Orange: recalling the color of our rich and generous land; it is the meaning of our struggle, the blood of a young man in his struggle for our emancipation;

- White: peace, but the peace of law;

- Green: hope, of course, for others; but for us the certainty of a better future.

Presenting the colors of the flag to the 1960 constitutional assembly, commissioner Mamadou Coulibaly said:

"...The orange stripe expresses the splendor of national flourishing, while serving as a reminder of the northern savannahs. The white stripe glorifies peace in purity and union of hearts, and is the guarantee of our success; and the green stripe, an expression of our hope for the future, recalls the lush virgin forest of Côte d'Ivoire, the first great source of national prosperity.The vertical alignment of the stripes symbolizes the dynamic youth heading into the future under the national motto "Union, Discipline and Work".

Gabriel Rougerie wrote in 1964, "The flag unites the colors of the three great landscapes of the Ivory Coast: green forest, white lagoon and orange savannah."

SHIELD

The coat of arms of the Ivory Coast, in its current version, was adopted in 2001. In the central part of the shield is the head of an African elephant. This animal is an outstanding symbol of the country, it is the largest found and also the Ivory Coast has been a territory well known for its ivory, a resource that has given its name to this country. At the top of the shield is the rising sun, the traditional symbol of a new beginning. As supports of the shield are two palm trees. At the bottom is the official name of the country in French, "République de Côte d'Ivoire" ("Republic of the Ivory Coast"), written on a ribbon.
