FLAG

It originates from the flag of the Empire of Brazil designed in 1822, whose symbols represented the royal families of Braganza and Habsburg, to which the first imperial house belonged.

The blue disk of the current flag represents the sky of Rio de Janeiro on the morning of November 15, 1889, the date of the proclamation of the Republic of Brazil. The motto "Ordem e Progresso" is inspired by Auguste Compte's positivism motto: "L'amour pour principe et l'ordre pour base; le progrès pour but".

This sky is shown as seen from outside the celestial sphere. Each of the twenty-seven stars represents one of the different states and the Federal District. The number of stars has been changing throughout history as new states were created, from the original twenty-one.

The star that represents the Federal District is Sigma Octantis, whose position makes it visible throughout the country throughout the year; also, due to its location, the rest of the stars seem to rotate around it. The star of the state of Pará appears above the others because at the time of independence it was the province with the capital, Belém.

The solitary star at the top of the dial is Espiga and has a double meaning: the first is to show that Brazil occupies territories in both hemispheres; the second, to make a reference to agriculture, since the Greek goddess Demeter was represented carrying a cereal in her hand.

The Cruise (Southern Cross) is a memory of the first name of Brazil given by the Portuguese: Tierra de Santa Cruz. It occupies the center of the sphere, because on the day of the proclamation of the republic, this constellation passed over the meridian of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Below the South Transept, on the left, you can see the star Canopus in the constellation Carinae. Canopus recalls the legend of the Argonauts, and was placed to symbolize the voyages of the Portuguese explorers during the period of the great voyages.

SHIELD

It was created by Decree No. 34 of November 19, 1889. The sword represents goodness; the central round shield, blue in color, contains the constellation of the Southern Cross, one of the consecrated symbols of Brazil. Around the dial there are 20 silver stars representing the 20 states of Brazil (there are currently 27).

The round shield rests on a large star with the national colors, green and yellow: this star represents the federal unit of the country. On the sides of the star there are two plants: on the left the coffee plant and on the right tobacco, the two main products of Brazil in 1889.

The striped gold background represents the dawn of the Republic. It is observed that it forms a large 20-pointed star, again symbolizing the States of the country at that time.

In the lower part, a blue ribbon with the legend "Estados Unidos do Brasil" which was later replaced in 1968 by "República Federativa do Brasil". The date indicated (November 15, 1889) on the tape is the one that corresponds to the proclamation of the Republic.
