SHIELD

The national emblem of Brunei dates from 1932 and was officially adopted on October 29, 1959. Since then it has prominently featured in the central part of the state flag. The national emblem is made up of five main elements: the royal pennon (in Malay Bendera) and parasol (called Payung Ubor-Ubor), the wings (Sayap), the hands (Tangan or Kimhap) and the crescent (Bulan). On the crescent is the national motto written in Malay with Arabic characters: "الدائمون المحسنون بالهدى" "Sentiasa membuat kebajikan dengan petunjuk Allah" (English: "Always at the service with the guidance of God"). Below, a ribbon with the official name of the state, "Brunei Darussalam" ("Brunei, homeland of peace").

The banner and the parasol are the signs of the monarchy. The two wings, with four feathers each, represent the protection of justice and peace. The crescent is the symbol of Islam, the national religion. The hands remind us of the government's duty to protect the people.

SULTAN EMBLEM

After the approval of the Constitution in 1959, the sultan of Brunei adopted a personal emblem different from the national one, in which the two hands were replaced by the figures of two cats (kuching emas) lying down, with their hind legs resting on the ground . At his coronation in 1968, the current monarch, Hassanal Bolkiah, wore a crown (mahkota) with an original design based on the brocaded turbans of previous sultans. The crown, made of precious metals, is decorated with several pendants and a sarpech, the jewel with which a turban is adorned, formed by a crescent moon next to a ten-pointed star and topped with a seven-pointed ornament. Around 1999, the sultan's personal emblem was replaced by a new, more elaborate version. The central elements remained the crescent with the inscription, since then green, and the winged parasol. A representation of the sultan's crown was introduced and the entire ensemble was adorned with two ears of rice with a schematic outline. In the upper part of the emblem you can read the name of God (Allah) written in yellow or gold letters, the predominant color in this emblem.
