FLAG

The flag was officially adopted on January 23, 1831, after Belgian independence from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1830. It played an important role during the revolution and its colors served as a reminder of an old banner with horizontal bands used during an earlier revolt in 1789, when the Netherlands was under Austrian rule.

The flag of Belgium is a tricolor flag consisting of three equal vertical bands displaying the national colors of Belgium: black, yellow, and red. The colors are taken from the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant and the vertical design may be based on the flag of France.

Officially, the dimensions of the flag have been set at 2.60m high by 3m wide, giving an unusual ratio of 13:15. For civilian use a more common ratio of 2:3 is used.

MILITARY PAVILION

By decision of February 23, 1950, a flag of the military navy clearly different from the national flags was created. It has the proportions 2:3.

It uses the three national colors, associating them with white, according to the White Ensign model of the Royal Navy.

The design uses the cross of Saint Andrew in homage to the Cross of Burgundy, which was the emblem of the great Burgundian state in the late Middle Ages. The apostle Saint Andrew was in fact the patron of this political group that spread through the current states of Belgium and Spain and in Burgundy located in France.

This flag was raised for the first time on March 2, 1950.

ROYAL STANDARD

The Royal Standard of Belgium is the personal ensign of the monarch of that country. It is considered a personal badge, and not an insignia associated with his title, since it undergoes some modifications when a new holder of the Belgian crown begins his reign.

This banner consists of a square-shaped purple cloth in which the Belgian arms are embroidered in its central part and on both sides. The coat of arms is only shown adorned with the royal crown and a golden heraldic cartouche, an element that is not reproduced in the official versions of the coat of arms. It is personalized with the royal monogram of each monarch, crowned, repeated near each corner, diagonally and also reproduced on both sides. Belgian royal banners have followed this pattern since the reign of Albert I. Their predecessors used the national colors with the royal arms at their center as ensign, usually with the royal crown, brackets and a ribbon bearing the country's motto "The Union force does" ("L'union fait la force" in French).

Michel R. Lupant in his book Flags and coats of arms of the Kingdom of Belgium, edited by the Belgian-European Center for Flag Studies, stated that the color of the royal standard should be red, with a hue similar to that of poppies (rouge ponceau) although it has ended up adopting purple because it is the color of the bands, ribbons and pins of the Order of Leopold, the most important of the Belgian monarchy.

The monogram of King Felipe, monarch of the Belgians since June 21, 2013, is made up of the letters "F" and "P", which are the initials of his name in the three official languages of the country (Dutch, French and German). ).

SHIELD

The coat of arms of Belgium bears as its emblem a golden lion on a sable field, the so-called Belgian Lion or Leo Belgicus, which are the arms of the Duke of Brabant, the dukedom that led the rebellion against Emperor Joseph II, which led to the creation of the United Belgian States in 1790. The current form, in its various versions (complete, half and simplified), was determined by Royal Decree on March 17, 1831.

The complete version of the Belgian heraldic arms consists of a sable coat of arms charged with a lion rampant in gold, armed and lampasado de gules; stamped by a gold helmet with a visor adorned with gold and sable lambrequins and with a royal crown as a crest. The shield is coupled with two gold sceptres passed in a cross, the one on the right hand in a band ending in a hand of justice and the one on the left in a bar with a rampant lion; around the shield, the collar of the Order of Leopold. As supports, two gold leopard lions, each holding a spear with the state flag, in black, yellow and red. Under the coat of arms, a sable-riveted gules ribbon with the national motto in gold letters: L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE (in French) or EENDRACHT MAAKT MACHT (in Dutch), that is, "Unity is strength". The whole is placed on a mantle of gules and ermine embellished with gold, stamped with the royal crown. Attached behind the mantle, the arms of the ten provinces that constituted Belgium in 1837, which are, from left to right: Walloon Brabant, Antwerp, West Flanders, East Flanders, Liège, Hainaut, Limburg, Luxembourg, Namur and Flemish Brabant.
