FLAG

The flag of Antigua and Barbuda was adopted on February 27, 1967. Designed by a school teacher, Reginald Samuels, it is composed of the upper half of a sun emerging from a horizontal band of blue. Below this strip is a white background and above it, a black background. On both sides of the flag are two right angled scalene triangles (with their right angles in the lower corners) in red.

The sun represents the dawn of a new era for the country, black represents the African ancestors of the majority of the population, blue hope and red energy. The golden yellow, blue and white combination also represents the natural environment of the Caribbean islands: sun, sea and sand.

OTHER FLAGS

On state and military vessels, a flag consisting of a red cross on a white field and the national flag in the canton is used.

SHIELD

The coat of arms of Antigua and Barbuda was designed in 1966 by Gordon Christopher. It was officially introduced on February 16, 1967. The symbolism is more complex in relation to the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, but many elements are similar.

At the top of the shield, above the helmet, is a pineapple, a fruit for which the islands are famous. There are several plants around the shield, all abundant in the country: red hibiscus, sugar cane, and yucca. Supporting the shield is a pair of deer that represent the fauna of the islands. The design of the shield shows the sun, which is also found on the flag, rising from a sea of blue and white. The sun symbolizes a new beginning, and the black background represents the African origins of many of the nation's citizens. At the bottom of the shield, facing the sea, is a stylized sugar mill. Under the shield is represented a ribbon on which the national motto is written: "Each endeavouring, all achieving" ("Each one striving, all achieving").
