FLAG

The flag has been in force since December 21, 1990, ten months before its independence. While Croatia was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the flag was similar, but had a red five-pointed star with a yellow border instead of the coat of arms.

The flag of Croatia is made up of three horizontal stripes, red, white and blue according to the Pan-Slavic colors, but with an inversion of blue and red. In the middle is placed the coat of arms of Croatia.

All three colors have been in use since 1848. When Croatia was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the flag had a red five-pointed star with a yellow border instead of the coat of arms. The star was replaced in May 1990, shortly after the first multi-party elections. The colors of the traditional Croatian coat of arms have been reversed so as not to repeat the symbols of the Independent State of Croatia that existed from 1941 to 1945. The current flag and coat of arms were adopted on December 21, 1990, approximately 10 months after the declaration of independence.

The Croatian flag combines the colors of the flags of the Kingdom of Croatia (red and white), the Kingdom of Slavonia (blue and white), and partially the Kingdom of Dalmatia (blue and yellow).

While Croatia's Banovin existed within the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, it had a similar flag without the modern crown above the chessboard. During the Independent State of Croatia, the flag was like the modern one, but without a crown and there was the letter "U" in the upper left part of the flag. Also, the first field of the Croatian chessboard was white. Although Croatia was part of the SFR of Yugoslavia, its tricolor was the same, but it had a red five-pointed star with a yellow border instead of the coat of arms. The star was replaced by the coat of arms in May 1990, shortly after the first elections. The current flag and coat of arms were officially adopted on December 21, 1990, approximately ten months before the proclamation of independence from Yugoslavia and one day before the Constitution of Croatia on December 22, 1990.

PRESIDENTIAL FLAG

The flag of the President of the Republic of Croatia is square in shape bordered by a thin border of alternating red and white fields. In the middle of the flag on a blue background is a sign in the form of the historical Croatian coat of arms with 25 red and silver fields. The shield is adorned with a crown of medallions in which the historical Croatian coats of arms are arranged from left to right of the shield in this order: the oldest known coat of arms of Croatia, the coats of arms of the Republic of Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria and Slavonia. Beams of parallel gold, red, and white lines extend longitudinally from the medallion. Above the shield is a ribbon in the colors of the flag of the Republic of Croatia, on which the letters "RH" are embroidered in gold letters in the Roman capital.

SHIELD

The coat of arms of Croatia is described in a law passed on December 21, 1990. The law included a proposal submitted by a commission chaired by Nikša Stančić, head of the Department of Croatian History at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Zagreb who in turn had commissioned the design of the shield to Miroslav Šutej, a graphic designer.

The coat of arms is made up of a checkered or checkered coat of arms in gules and silver; twenty-five orders (squares), five orders horizontally and the same number vertically. To the bell, a crown composed of five stylized shields, with their points towards the head, in which the arms of the historical regions from which Croatia has originated appear:

- The first shield is a field of azure with a silver crescent, surmounted on the head by a gold six-pointed star which are the old arms of Zagreb and central Croatia.

- The second coat of arms is a field of azure with two horizontal bands of gules, symbol of the ancient Republic of Ragusa.

- The third coat of arms features, in a field of azure, three leopard heads with their tongues sticking out, made of gold crowned with the same metal that represents the Kingdom of Dalmatia.

- In the fourth coat of arms appears, in a field of azure, a golden goat with horns and clogs of gules, which is the coat of arms of Istria.

- On the last shield, a field of azure, a gules sash bordered with silver and charged with a silver-bellied sable sable, surmounted on the head by a six-pointed gold star that are the arms of Slavonia.

The chess pattern is due to the legend in which King Držislav I is captured by the Venetians and in exchange for his freedom the king played three games of chess against the Venetian doge Pietro II Orseolo of which the king won, his colors are red and white due to white Croatia and red Croatia.

escudo_sub 1.png

DALMACIA
