HISTORY
The first Cambodian flag as such dates back to the time of French rule over Indochina. The Kingdom of Cambodia remained a protectorate since 1863 and the flag used was similar to the current one, only instead of upper and lower blue stripes, there was a blue border.
In 1942, the Empire of Japan occupied the territory of Indochina during World War II with the approval of Vichy France. In 1945, with the Japanese defeat, the French resumed administration of Cambodia, but the country had begun to demand greater degrees of autonomy. In 1948, the country declared independence and adopted the flag used today.

In 1970, a coup led by Lon Nol toppled King Norodom Sihanouk and established the Khmer Republic, which adopted a new flag, on October 9 of that year. The drawing of Angkor Wat and the red background were transferred to the canton on a blue background and three stars were placed in the upper right corner. However, the government was not recognized and the United Nations used the old emblem.

The Cambodian Civil War continued and Pol Pot defeated the Khmer Republic in 1975. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge controlled much of the country and declared Democratic Kampuchea. The new flag adopted was completely red and with a simple drawing of Angkor Wat in yellow. When Pol Pot's dissidents with Vietnamese support took control of the country in 1979 and established the Democratic Republic of Kampuchea, the flag was modified by giving more detail to the drawing of Angkor Wat and adding two secondary towers.

On May 1, 1989, within the framework of the peace process, the name of the country changed to the State of Cambodia, democratic elections were held and a new flag was established, with a red and blue bicolor background. The detailed Angkor Wat design of the monarchical flag was taken up again, with five towers and in yellow.

When the United Nations Transitional Authority (UNTAC) was installed in 1991, the flag used was light blue like the UN flag with a map of Cambodia in white and on it, the name of Cambodia in the Cambodian language. In 1993, the monarchy was restored and the 1948 emblem was readopted.

SHIELD
The Royal Coat of Arms of Cambodia was restored in 1993, after the restoration of the monarchy. During the period when the country was under the control of the Khmer Rouge this coat of arms was replaced by a circular emblem composed of the elements of the flag.
The shield is composed of two cups, one located on top of the other; above the upper one, placed horizontally, a sacred sword surmounted by the Cambodian version of the Om symbol. On the sides of the cups are represented two branches of laurel that join behind a representation of the plate of the Royal Order of Cambodia. Behind these elements is the royal mantle.
At the top of the shield appears the royal crown of Cambodia, with a ray of light on it. The shield is flanked by two mythical animals: Gajasinha, on the left, a lion with the trunk of an elephant; and singha, who is another mythological lion, on the right. Each of these animals carries a five-tier parasol symbolizing the king and queen.
At the bottom, written on a ribbon, can be read the national motto written in Cambodian: ជាតិ សាសនា ព្រះមហាក្សត្រ ("Nation, Religion, King").
