The national flag of Azerbaijan consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width, bright blue at the top, red at the center and green at the bottom. In the center on a red background, a crescent and a white eight-pointed star.

Bright blue symbolizes Turkish multinationalism, red represents progress in establishing a modern state and the development of democracy, and green shows the nation's relationship with the Muslim world and Islam, the religion of the majority of Azerbaijanis. .

While the crescent and star are typically seen as symbols of Islam, some historians and researchers disagree on why an eight-pointed star is used instead of the classic five-pointed star used in other Islamic flags. Fatali Khan Khoyski points to the eight letters of the word "Azerbaijan" as they are written in Arabic. The eight points are also believed to represent the eight Turkic peoples of Azerbaijan. The problem is that there are only seven Turkic peoples: Azeris, Ottomans, Jagatais, Tatars, Kipchaks, Selijuks and Turkmens. The Kipchaks may actually reflect two peoples, the Kazakhs and the Kyrgyz.

SHIELD

The national coat of arms of Azerbaijan mixes traditional and modern elements. It is a symbol of the independence of the Azerbaijani state.

The focal point of the emblem is fire, an ancient symbol of the Azeri land and related to ancient Persian religions such as Zoroastrianism, however, it represents the name of Allah.

The colors used in the composition of the emblem are taken from the national flag. These are found in the background behind the eight pointed star where the fire is shown. The star symbolizes the eight branches of the Turkish people, and between each point of the star is a yellow circle (besante). At the bottom of the emblem is a bundle of wheat, the main agricultural product of Azerbaijan. The other plant represented at the bottom is the oak.

During the existence of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan the competition for the presentation of the national emblem was announced. Each time the contest turned out to be a failure and the last time it was proposed that the approval be given on the second anniversary of the Republic, May 28, 1920. But due to the Soviet invasion on April 27 and the fall of the Republic plans failed again. After 70 years of the collapse of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan, on November 17, 1990, the preparation and confirmation of the new coat of arms was declared by Ali Majlis of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, for which the competition for the best design of the coat of arms was announced. national. At the beginning of the year 1993 Milli Majils met and discussed the designs presented in the competition and those made in the years of the Democratic Republic. Milli Majlis confirmed the original design of the Democratic Republic with some variations. The national emblem was adopted by Law number 460 of January 19, 1993 of the Constitution of the Azerbaijani Republic.
