FLAG

The flag of Belize was adopted on September 21, 1981, the day Belize became independent. It consists of the Coat of Arms on a blue field with red stripes at the top and bottom.

In 1981, Belize gained its independence and a competition was held to design a national flag for the country. The winning submission consisted of the unofficial national flag used by the People's United Party with a red border added on all four sides. This was changed to a red border only at the top and bottom before the design was officially adopted. The winning design, also known as the "Unity Flag", was made by two government officials: Everal Waight, Public Secretary, and Inez Sánchez, Director of Education.

The flag is royal blue, with a white disc in the center containing the national coat of arms held by a mestizo and an Afro-descendant. The flag of Belize is the only country that has humans represented as a major design element on its national flag, although the flag of Malta contains an image of Saint George in the George Cross insignia, and the flags of the British territories Overseas Montserrat and the Virgin Islands and French Polynesia also represent humans. The flags of several other countries have parts of the human body represented. The flag of Brunei has human hands, and the flags of Uruguay and Argentina have human facial features depicted in a personified sun.

The flag is bordered at the top and bottom by two red stripes. In total, the flag incorporates 12 different colors and shades, making it the most colorful national flag in the world.

The colors of the flag are, respectively, those of the country's national parties, the People's United Party (PUP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP).

SHIELD

The coat of arms of Belize dates from 1981, the year of independence, although it is very similar to the previous version, adopted in 1967, to which the outer crown of leaves and the terrace of vegetation under the two tenants were added and it became more big the tree that stamps the shield. The original colonial coat of arms of British Honduras, which was already tiered and included the ship and the symbols of the wood industry, dates from 1819 and was significantly changed in 1907 and 1967 until it adopted its current form.

The various motifs depicted on the shield reference an important aspect of Belizean history, the mahogany industry, which formed the basis of the country's economy in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Shield divided in pearl: in the first, on a silver background, an oar and a natural square ax perched on a cross; in the second, on a gold background, a saw and a triangular ax also natural and posed on a cross; in the third, light blue, a natural ship sailing on an undulating foot of azure on two bands of sinople and gold.

By timbre, a natural mahogany tree. As tenants: to the right, a natural mestizo woodcutter, with silver pants, who carries an ax in his right hand; on the left, a natural black lumberjack, also in silver pants, carrying an oar in his left hand; both on a natural sinople terrace.

Under the shield, a gold ribbon with the national motto in Latin: "Sub umbra floreo" (Under the shade I flourish).

The whole set, surrounded by a crown of 25 natural leaves.
