The flag of Slovakia is made up of three horizontal stripes of the same dimensions. The top stripe is white, the middle stripe is blue, and the bottom stripe is dark red. In the central part of the flag, slightly displaced towards the edge closest to the mast, is the national coat of arms.
The original version of the flag, dating from 1848, lacked the emblem of the republic: a gothic shield with a red background with a double white cross (patriarchal) on three blue hills.
The flag of Slovakia in its current form (but with another coat of arms or without arms) can be traced back to the revolutionary year of 1848. It was also used semi-officially in Czechoslovakia before World War II, by the Slovak Republic during World War II.
In 1990, the Ministry of the Interior commissioned Ladislav Čisárik, a painter and heraldic artist, and Ladislav Vrtel, an expert in heraldry, to create a new national coat of arms and flag. Čisárik and Vrtel based their designs for a modern coat of arms and flag on an existing coat of arms from the 14th century. However, Čisárik and Vrtel chose to enlarge the double cross three times to emphasize it as a national symbol. In addition to the national coat of arms and the national flag, the duo also designed a new presidential banner, which also incorporates the double cross.
Since the Slovak flag without the coat of arms is identical to the current flag of the Russian Federation and can also be compared to the modern flag of Slovenia, the Slovak Constitution added the national coat of arms in September 1992. The coat of arms of arms of Slovakia was added to the flag to avoid confusion with the current flag of Russia.
