FLAG
The flag was adopted by law no. 59/13 for the autonomous republic and retained at independence in 1960, and in the 1962 constitution. Despite many political upheavals within Chad since independence, the flag has not changed. This may be because the flag is not associated with any of the main power rivals within Chad, which had no sense of national identity before independence and shortly after independence.

National flag
Ratio: 2 x 3

Chad's flag is a vertical tricolor consisting (from left to right) of a blue, a gold, and a red column. They were intended to be a combination of the colors blue, white, and red as seen on the flag of France with the pan-African colors of green, yellow, and red. Also, blue represents heaven and hope; gold is the sun and the desert, and red means bloodshed for independence.
The Chadian flag is almost identical to the national flag of Romania, although the colors of Chadian flags may vary from those specified for Romania. Romania has used the flag since 1866, which first appeared in its current form in Wallachia. It was officially in use from 1848 to 1948, when it was replaced by the flag of the Socialist Republic of Romania. Chad began using its current flag in 1960, after it achieved independence from France. When Chad adopted its flag, Romania's flag was different: it used to feature an insignia in the middle of the flag on top of the tricolor; this was added after World War II during the communist era of the second half of the 20th century. But in 1989, Romania's communist government was overthrown and the insignia was removed, reverting the Romanian flag to the pre-war version that matched the one that had been adopted by Chad in the meantime.

SHIELD
Chad's coat of arms was adopted in 1970. The center of the shield is a chevroned field of gold and azure. The coat of arms is supported by two figures: a golden heron and a rampant lion charged with a gules point. The shield is surmounted by a figure of gules that represents the sun. At the bottom of the shield are the National Order of Chad, the country's most important decoration, and, written on a ribbon, the national motto: "Unité, Travail, Progrès" (Unity, Work, Progress).
The gules sun symbolizes the beginning of a new time for the country. The goat represents the northern part of the country and the lion in the south represents bravery. The azur (blue) enamel symbolizes the water of Lake Chad.
