FLAG

The national flag of Bangladesh was officially adopted on January 17, 1972. It consists of a red disk on top of a dark green flag. The red disk is offset slightly toward the flagpole so it appears centered when the flag is flying.

The flag is based on a similar flag used during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, which had a yellow map of the country within the red disk. In 1972 this map was removed from the flag. One reason given was the difficulty in correctly rendering the map on both sides of the flag. The civil ensign and the naval ensign place it in the canton of a red or white field, respectively.

The first version of the flag was designed and manufactured by a section of Swadheen Bangla Nucleus student leaders and activists on June 6, 1970, in room 108 of Iqbal Hall, Dhaka University.

According to the CIA World Fact Book, the green used in the flag represents the exuberance of the country's green landscape. On January 13, 1972 the flag was modified. The map in the center has been removed and the red disc has been moved towards the flagpole. The red in the center is a symbolic representation of a new day and the end of oppression in the form of the sun rising on the land of Bangladesh.

SHIELD

The national emblem of Bangladesh was adopted shortly after the country's independence in 1971.

In the central part of the emblem, a water lily flower is represented, located on several waves that symbolize water and surrounded by two ears of rice. On the water lily there are four five-pointed stars placed on the sides of a flower bud.

The water lily, one of the country's national symbols, is a plant that grows in numerous rivers that flow through Bangladesh. Rice is essential as a crop for agriculture and food for the country's population. The four stars represent the four fundamental principles originally enshrined in Bangladesh's first constitution in 1972: nationalism, secularism, socialism, and democracy.
