FLAG
The flag of Angola is divided horizontally into two halves, a red upper stripe and a black lower part. The red color symbolizes the blood shed by the people during the struggle for independence and the black symbolizes the African continent. The symbol in the center, in yellow, is made up of a gear intersected with a machete and a star. The gear represents industrial workers, the machete farmers, and the star progress and international solidarity.
Based on the flag of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), the symbols are reminiscent of the hammer and sickle of the Soviet flag.

SHIELD
The coat of arms of Angola, more an emblem than a heraldic shield, in its current version dates from 1990, the year in which the official name of the State was changed, "Popular Republic of Angola" -adopted as a result of independence, in 1975 -, by the current "Republic of Angola". However, the shield still retains the Marxist evocation of the original emblem, elements that are also repeated on the national flag.
It is a circular emblem in the center of which there is a machete and a hoe passed in a cross, alluding to the revolution of the working agricultural people that led to independence. Above, a five-pointed star, another socialist symbol, in allegory of progress. Below, a rising sun, the traditional symbol of a new beginning. All these elements are surrounded by a circle formed by half a cogwheel, a symbol of industry workers, and in the other half a bunch of coffee leaves and an ear of corn, due to the significance of these agricultural resources in the Angolan economy.
At the base, an open book represents the importance of education. Under the emblem, a ribbon bears the official Portuguese name of the State; this is the only element that changed in the modification made to the shield in 1990.
