The flag of Bulgaria consists of three horizontal stripes of the same size in white on the top, green in the center and red on the bottom. White represents peace, green represents the fertility of the Bulgarian lands, and red the courage of the people. There are three stripes, because they represent the three ancient regions of Bulgaria.

The first flags representing Bulgaria date back to the beginning of the 19th century, at the time of the Ottoman domination. These flags mainly used the colors of Pan-Slavism, a movement that defended the union of the Slavic peoples of Europe: white, blue and red, imitating the colors of the Russian flag. When Bulgaria gained its independence in 1878, the Russian flag was adopted, but the central stripe was replaced by green, as a reference to Bulgaria's development as an agricultural country.

SHIELD

The current version of the coat of arms of the Republic of Bulgaria is described in the Law on the Coat of Arms of Bulgaria which was approved on August 5, 1997. The current coat of arms is the version of the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Bulgaria from 1927.

The coat of arms of the Republic of Bulgaria shall be a gold-crowned lion rampant on a dark red shield-shaped field. Above the shield will be a large crown which were originally the crowns of the Bulgarian tsars (ie emperors) of the second Bulgarian state with five crosses and another cross above the crown. The shield will be supported by two gold-crowned rampant lions, facing the shield from the heraldic right and left sides. They will be placed on two crossed oak branches with fruits. Below the shield, on a white band placed on the oak branches with a tricolor border, will be written in gold letters "Съединението прави силата" ("Unity makes strength").
