This flag was maintained after independence, on January 1, 1960. When the Cameroonian territory under British rule decided to join the new country, two yellow stars were added next to the flagpole representing the two federal territories, the French and the English, the October 1, 1961. The current flag was finally adopted on May 20, 1975, the date on which Cameroon became a unitary state.

SHIELD
The national emblem of Cameroon currently in force dates from 1986, although its basic design is from 1960. It is a divided and curtained shield, with enamels corresponding to the colors of the national flag: sinople, gules and gold, with the golden pentagram of the flag put on the head. The central partition, in gules, is loaded with a map of Cameroon in azure, on which a saber sword on a stick and some silver scales stand out, symbols of justice.
The coat of arms is held by two gold fasces passed in a cross, which recall the coat of arms of France, the former colonial power, and represent the republican authority. At the base, a gold ribbon inscribed with the official name of the state, "Republic of Cameroon", in a bilingual French-English version: RÉPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN – REPUBLIC OF CAMEROON. In its upper part, the national motto is written in French and English: “Paix, Travail, Patrie” “Peace, Work, Fatherland” (“Peace, Work, Fatherland”). It should be noted that the texts in French have a more prominent graphic treatment in relation to the corresponding ones in English.
