On the pole is a green triangle, with a white crescent and four white five-pointed stars, arranged vertically between the peaks of the crescent. Both the four stars and the four vertical stripes represent the four islands of the Comoros: yellow for Mohéli (Mwali), white for Mayotte (claimed by Comoros and referred to by this country as Mahoré, and still belonging to France), red for Anjouan (Nzwani) and blue for Grande Comore (Ngazidja). The green color and the crescent symbolize Islam, which is the majority religion in Comoros, and formed the old flag of Comoros before adding the four horizontal stripes.
This flag was officially adopted on January 7, 2001.

SHIELD
In the national seal of the Union of Comoros appears, in its central part, a crescent (crescent moon) charged with four five-pointed stars each. The crescent, a traditional symbol of Islam, and the stars represent the four islands that make up the union and are also part of the national flag.
Behind the crescent is represented the sun. These elements are surrounded by the name of the nation, “Union of Comoros”, in French and Arabic.
On the outside of the seal there are two laurel branches and on the lower one the national motto is written in French: “Unité – Solidarité – Développement” (“Unity - Solidarity - Development”)
