FLAG
The flag of Cape Verde was adopted on September 22, 1992. It consists of a blue background with a white, red and white horizontal triband. The bands have heights in proportion 6:1:1:1:3. Above the bands is a circle of 10 5-pointed stars, which is centered at 3/8 the width of the flag.

National flag
Ratio: 3 x 5

The stars represent the 10 largest islands in the country, while the blue symbolizes the ocean and the sky. The white and red bands represent the path of construction of the country, while the colors symbolize peace and effort, respectively. The circular formation of the stars, as well as the dark blue color of the background, show some similarity with the flag of the European Union.
Between 1975 and 1992 the flag used was very similar to the flag of Guinea-Bissau, a country with which there were even unification plans. The flag consisted of two horizontal stripes of the same size and one vertical with the Pan-African colors: red, green and yellow. In the vertical strip, unlike that of Guinea-Bissau, there were two ears of corn and a shell around the so-called "African black star". This flag was also distinguished from that of Guinea-Bissau by having dimensions of 2:3. In the late 1980s, the two countries began to grow apart, and Cape Verde decided to adopt a new flag, the one used today.

SHIELD
In the center of the coat of arms of Cape Verde, inside a blue equilateral triangle, there is a silver torch. Surrounding the triangle is written the official name of the country in Portuguese: “República de Cabo Verde”. The elements mentioned appear on a white background limited by two concentric blue circles and are located on three horizontal lines, also blue. A gold plumb line, aligned with the vertex of the equilateral triangle, superimposed on the two circumferences in its upper part, symbolizes the verticality and straightness that constitute the "key" of the constitution of Cape Verde.
Five golden stars with five points each appear on both sides of the outer circumference. These stars, which also appear on the national flag, represent the islands that make up Cape Verde. In the lower part of the shield three links and two green palm branches are represented.
