FLAG

When the process of Federation of Australia was officially implemented, on January 1, 1901, the new government called a competition for the design of a new national flag in April of that year. Most designs contained the Union Jack and the Southern Cross, although designs featuring native animals were also popular.

On September 3, 1901, the new Australian flag flew for the first time at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne. A simplified version of the winner was officially approved as the flag of Australia by King Edward VII in 1902. The Federal Parliament passed a resolution on June 2, 1904 to fly the flag on every fortification, ship, place of salute and public building. of the Commonwealth, on all occasions that flags are used, giving it the same status as the Union Jack in the United Kingdom.

The flag is composed of a blue background, with the flag of the United Kingdom in the canton. Under it, there is a white seven-pointed star, known as the Star of the Commonwealth, or also called the Star of the Federation (Commonwealth Star or Federation Star). The six points represent the six original states and the seventh for the territories and future states of Australia. On the outer half of the flag are four equally sized seven-pointed white stars and one smaller five-pointed star, arranged exactly as they appear in the constellation of the Southern Cross.

According to the Flags Act, the Australian flag must follow the following specifications: The Union Jack must occupy the upper quarter next to the flagpole. A white seven-pointed star representing the seven states of Australia and their territories in the center of the lower quarter next to the flagpole, pointing to the center of the Union Jack's St. George's cross. Its outside diameter should measure 3/10 of the width of the flag and the inside should measure 4/9 of the outside diameter. Five white stars representing the constellation of the Southern Cross. Four of them are seven-pointed (alpha crucis, beta crucis, gamma crucis, delta crucis) and one of them (epsilon crucis) is five-pointed.

The colors of the flag, which were not specified by the Flags Act, were specified by the Office of National Symbols and Awards of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

OTHER FLAGS

CIVIL FLAG

On June 4, 1903, the use of a flag for civil vessels registered in Australia was authorized. This flag, used both by the merchant navy and by pleasure boats, corresponded to a version of the original flag but with a red background replacing the traditional dark blue, which is why it is called the "Red Flag".

Due to the prohibition of the use of the national flag by civilians on land, this flag was widely used as the national flag until the restriction was abolished in 1941 by Prime Minister Robert Menzies. Finally, with the Flags Act of 1953, the situation was reversed, the use of the Red Ensign on land being prohibited.

NAVAL FLAG

The Royal Australian Navy flies the naval or war ensign, also known as the "White Ensign". It is composed of a white background on which the stars of the Southern Cross and the Star of the Federation are placed in dark blue, and with the Union Jack in the canton.

In its early days, the Australian Navy used the British Navy White Ensign on the stern alongside the Australian national flag on the bow of the ship. When Australian troops were fighting in the Vietnam War in 1965, the use of the British Army flag was questioned, considering that the United Kingdom was not part of that war. At that time, the design of the current Navy pavilion was presented, having royal approval on November 7, 1966. The pavilion was officially inaugurated on March 1, 1967 in the "HMAS Boonaroo".

ROYAL STANDARD

The royal standard used in Australia includes the elements that appear on the coat of arms of that country, that is, the coats of arms of the six states that make up the Australian Commonwealth: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. These coats of arms are surrounded on the outer edge by a stripe in the colors of the heraldic ermine.

On the elements of the blazons mentioned, in the Australian royal standard, a seven-pointed star is represented with an azure circle in which the initial of the reigning monarch appears, the English royal crown (known as the Crown of Saint Edward) and a gold garland composed of roses of the same.

SHIELD

Australia's coat of arms dates from 1912 and was awarded by King George V.

The Australian coat of arms includes the coats of arms of the six states that make up the country:

> For New South Wales: The Cross of Saint George, symbol of England adorned with one of the three lions of the English coat of arms and four gold eight-pointed stars, each located on each arm of the cross.

> For Victoria: The Southern Cross situated on a field of azure under the Crown of Saint Edward which is the royal crown of England and by extension of the United Kingdom and the former territories of the British Empire.

> For Queensland: an azure Maltese Cross under St Edward's Crown on a silver field.

> Across South Australia: a magpie lark perched on a synople and gules stick in a field of gold.

> Through Western Australia: a sable (black) swan in a field of gold.

> By Tasmania: a passing lion gules located in a silver field.

These coats of arms are surrounded on the outside by a filiera (diminished border) with the colors of the heraldic ermine. It is the symbol of the Federation of these states.

The heraldic stamp includes a weatherstrip, a helmet ornament, and the Star of the Australian Commonwealth which is a seven-pointed yellow star. Six of the points of the star represent the states that form the Commonwealth and the seventh symbolized (when it was incorporated in 1908) the territories that could be integrated in the future.

Also represented are the Australian national symbols, the golden wattle and, as shield supports, the kangaroo and the emu. The golden wattle, kangaroo and emu are regarded as the respective emblems of Australia's flora, fauna and birds. The golden wattle was officially declared a national emblem in August 1988.
