FLAG

The Burundi flag is made up of a white Saint Andrew's cross dividing the flag into four areas, the top and bottom being red, and the sides green. In the center of the flag is a white circle containing three red stars outlined in green, symbolizing the three majority ethnic groups in Burundi: the Hutus, the Twas and the Tutsis. They also symbolize the three elements of the national motto: unity, work and progress.

It was adopted on June 28, 1967, and the original ratio of the flag was changed from 2:3 on September 27, 1982 to 3:5.

SHIELD

The coat of arms of Burundi was adopted in 1966 and in it, appears in a field of gules or red color with filiera (narrow border) of gold (yellow or gold color), a lion's head of the same metal (color) clarified sable or black. The shield is supported by three traditional African silver spears (grey or white).

At the bottom of the coat of arms is written on a ribbon the national motto in French: "Unité, Travail, Progrès" ("Unity, Work, Progress").
