FLAG

The flag of North Korea consists of a central red panel, bordered both above and below by a narrow white stripe and a wider blue stripe. The central red panel has a red pentagram within a white circle near the hoist. The flag is prohibited for public use in South Korea due to its association with the ruling North Korean regime, although there are some exceptions for the use of the flag.

The prominent motif on the North Korean flag is a red star, which is a universal symbol of communism and socialism, although since the flag's adoption, the application of Juche philosophy of a Marxist-Leninist nature has superseded the communist authority as the leading ideology of the state, and references to communism have been systematically removed from the country's constitution and legal documents. However, the constitution is still said to be socialist in nature. Despite the many changes in the constitution, the description of the flag has always been the same.

According to a typical North Korean official text published in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, Kim Il-sung gave the following meaning to the elements of the flag:

The red of the flag symbolizes anti-Japanese sentiment, and is the color of the blood shed by Korean patriots and the invincible power of our people firmly united to support the Republic. White symbolizes a bloodline, a land, a language, a culture of our mono-ethnic country, which lived in purity. And blue represents the gallant face of our people and symbolizes the spirit of the Korean people fighting for world peace and progress.

According to Korea expert and scholar Brian Reynolds Myers, in North Korea, the flag of the Workers' Party of Korea and the personal banner of the Supreme Commander of the KPA are treated with more reverence than the national flag of North Korea, being the flag of the Supreme Commander the highest among the three in terms of reverence.

The national emblem of North Korea, adopted in September 1948, is an official symbol of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The emblem, which forms an oval frame, bears Mount Paektu at its top —considered a sacred place in North Korea—, and is crowned by a five-pointed red star, representing the socialist state. In the center of the emblem, a hydroelectric plant with the ears of rice that is intended to reflect the strength of the country's industry and agriculture, and the determination of the North Korean people to advance towards socialism and communism with a self-sufficient economy. The frame is bounded by a red ribbon bearing the inscription Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) in Hangul characters.
