FLAG
The Guyanese flag, known as the golden arrowhead , was approved on May 26, 1966 . It was designed by Whitney Smith , an American known for his studies focused on the symbolism of flags.
The original design did not include the black and white borders which were incorporated by the United Kingdom College of Heraldry .
The green color represents agriculture and forests. White symbolizes the rivers and water. Gold (yellow) reflects the mineral wealth of the country. The black represents the capacity of resistance, and the red the ardor and the dynamism.

SHIELD
In the shield appear, in a silver field, three waves of azure that represent the rivers and seas of the country. The three waves are surmounted by the figure of the Amazonian Victory (water lily) located on the head of the shield. In the lower point, a hoatzin (bird) in natural colors, another of the national symbols.
The shield is supported by two figures (supports, in heraldic terminology) of jaguars carrying a beak, a sugar cane and a rice stalk symbolizing the rice and sugar industries in Guyana.
It stamps a gold helmet with weatherstrip and lambrequin, these last two elements in silver and azure, and a crest in the shape of an Amerindian headdress, a symbol of the indigenous population, with two diamonds on the sides that represent the mining industry.
At the bottom is, on a silver ribbon, the national motto in English written in saber letters: "One People, One Nation, One Destiny" ("One People, One Nation, One Destiny").
