FLAG

Along with the flag of Denmark, the Austrian flag is one of the oldest in the world.

According to a legendary story, the flag was invented by Duke Leopold V of Austria (1157 - 1194) after the harsh battle of Acre in 1191, during the Crusades, when his white clothes were totally stained with blood, except for the part that covered his belt, which was left white.

The flag was actually designed in the 13th century by Duke Frederick II of Austria (1210 - 1246), the last of the Babenberg dynasty, who was seeking greater independence from the Holy Roman Empire. The oldest representation of this design is found on a shield preserved in the Lilienfeld monastery, dating from November 30, 1230.

After the end of the Austrian empire, the Republic of Austria readjusted the red - white - red scheme on October 20, 1918 until the Anschluss, when Austria was annexed to the Third Reich. After the Nazi defeat in World War II, the flag was established on May 1, 1945.

The appearance of the flag of the Republic of Austria is stipulated in article 3 of the Law on the Coat of Arms, according to which, it consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width, of which the middle one is white, and the upper stripes and bottom are red, resulting in the combination red-white-red.

Unlike the federal and maritime service flags, the width-to-length ratio is not legally anchored in the national flag. However, a general ratio of two to three has been established. However, in Austria the use of flutter and banner flags is much more widespread, meaning that the red-white-red color combination can be seen much more vertically next to each other than horizontally below each other . Unlike the official federal flag with the federal coat of arms that contains the national flag can be freely used by all citizens.

OTHER FLAGS

GOVERNMENT FLAG

The official flag of the federal government shows the coat of arms of the Republic of Austria, which is spread evenly across the two red stripes. The ratio of the height of the service flag to its length is two to three. When the service flag is used as a banner flag (hanging flag), the coat of arms is placed upright, as is common practice. Contrary to a widespread assumption, the official flag is not the national flag of Austria, which can only be displayed in red-white-red and without the national coat of arms.

SHIELD

The coat of arms of Austria dates from the year 1919. It is a saber eagle with outstretched wings, carrying on its chest the coat of arms of the former Duchy of Austria, which is a field divided into three horizontal stripes of the same size: the upper one gules, and the lower and central silver, respectively. The eagle carries in its claws a sickle, which is the symbol of agriculture (on the right) and a hammer for industry (on the left), both made of gold. It also holds between its paws a broken silver chain. The eagle appears crowned with a mural crown, a symbol of the Republic, which is the current form of government in the country (initially it represented the middle class).

The coat of arms introduces some modifications, but it is very similar to the versions adopted in 1919 and 1934. All of them come from the coat of arms of the Emperors of Austria, from which some elements were removed, such as one of the two heads of the eagle (which was two-headed , except in the 1934 version), three crowns (imperial: the superior one and royal ones that were placed on the heads of the eagle), the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece (in some versions more orders appeared) or the barracks with the symbols other territories dominated by the Habsburgs.

After 1945 the broken chains of the eagle were added to the shield in reference to independence from Germany.
