FLAG

This flag was adopted on August 4, 1984 and designed by then President Thomas Sankara.

The Burkina Faso flag is made up of two horizontal stripes of equal width, the upper one red and the lower one green, with a yellow five-pointed star in the center of the flag. The colors are those of pan-Africanism (which are based on those of the Ethiopian flag), although they also represent the socialist revolution (red) and the fertility of the land of Burkina Faso (green). The yellow star represents the luminous guide of the revolution.

The current territory of Burkina Faso became independent from France on August 1, 1960 under the name of Upper Volta. The flag of that state was a tricolor formed by three horizontal stripes. The colors black, white and red represented the three main branches of the Volta River that crossed the country.

The flag was abolished when the name of Burkina Faso and the current flag were adopted.

SHIELD

The coat of arms of Burkina Faso currently in force was adopted in August 1997. It is cut, gules and sinople, with a gold five-pointed star standing out on the partition; These are the colors and elements that make up the national flag. It has as supports two silver horses on both sides, with a pair of lances passed in a cross coupled behind the shield. At the top, a ribbon with the name of the state; at the base, another with the national motto in French: "Unité, Progrès, Justice" ("Unity, Progress, Justice"), accompanied on both sides by ears of sorghum and surmounted by an open book.

It took up the model of the first coat of arms of the independent Republic and replaced the coat of arms of the revolutionary stage, of a socialist nature.
