FLAG

The flag of the Philippines was adopted on June 12, 1898. It is composed of two horizontal stripes of the same size, the upper one blue and the lower one red. On the edge closest to the mast there is a white equilateral triangle that contains in its center a golden or yellow sun with sixteen rays that surround eight others that are thicker and three stars of the same color with five points each, located near the the vertices of the triangle. The proportions of the flag are: 1:2.

Both the sun, the color red, and the white triangle were originally used by the Katipunan, the revolutionary organization that led the revolt against Spanish rule in the late 19th century.

The flag was designed in 1897 by General Emilio Aguinaldo, president of the revolutionary government, when he was living in Hong Kong during his exile and the Philippine revolution against Spanish rule had already begun. The original flag was made up of the same elements as the current version, but the sun was represented with a mythological face and its rays were more numerous.

The red color of the flag symbolizes the blood, valor and courage of those who fought for the country's independence; blue represents national unity and ideals, and white is the color of purity and peace. The sun represents the birth of a new era that began with the independence of the country. The eight rays of the sun symbolize the eight provinces that started the revolt against Spanish colonial rule. The three five-pointed stars represent the three major geographic areas of the Philippine Islands: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The Philippine flag is the only one that indicates the state of war. When the red stripe is located at the top of the flag (or to the observer's left if it is arranged vertically, with the white triangle at the top) it means that the Philippines is at war.

According to the Philippine government, the white triangle means equality and fraternity; the blue stripe represents peace, truth and justice, and the red field patriotism and the courage and blood of those who fought. The eight primary sunbeams represent the first eight provinces (Batangas, Bulacán, Cavite, Laguna, Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, and Tarlac) that sought independence from Spain and were placed under martial law by the Spanish during the Revolution. Philippine from 1896.Sometimes the eight-rayed sun represents the Hispanidad of the Philippines and the Filipinos. The three stars represent the three major geographic divisions of the country: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

However, the explanation given in the Philippine Proclamation of Independence of 1898 differs from the current official explanation. This held that the white triangle represented the emblem of the Katipunan, the secret society that opposed Spanish control. He also stated that the colors of the flag represented those of the United States flag as a token of gratitude for the protection that the United States granted them against Spain during the Philippine Revolution. It also maintains that one of the stars represents the island of Panay, instead of all the Visaya islands.

SHIELD

In the coat of arms of the Republic of the Philippines are represented the symbols of the country that are also part of the national flag: The sun with eight thick rays and sixteen narrower ones and the five-pointed stars, symbols of the most important groups of islands in the country: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

In the two vertical partitions of the shield are placed the symbols alluding to the countries that controlled the Philippines, the white-headed eagle of the United States and the rampant lion of the former Kingdom of León that appears on the shield of Spain. The lion, in the Philippine coat of arms, has its colors altered (it is gold on a gules or red field, in addition to appearing uncrowned, and in the Spanish coat of arms it is represented in purple on a silver or white field) and crowned. .

The shield of the Philippines is made up of a split field of azure and gules, a silver stripe located on the head and an escutcheon of the same metal located in the center of the shield. In the azure partition, a gold eagle with a silver head, armed with gold is shown with its wings outstretched holding in its talons a laurel branch and a bundle of arrows. In the gules partition, a rampant lion of gold tongued, clawed and armed with the same metal. On the boss, a silver strip charged with three gold five-pointed stars placed one and two. In the escutcheon, also silver, a gold sun with twenty-four rays, eight thicker. In the lower part of the shield appears, on a silver ribbon, the official name of the country: "REPUBLIKA NG PILIPINAS" , written in saber letters.
